The Name

Hillel, Hebrew
As a word, it means, "praise". Replace the " i " with an " a " then compare it to the word for "Praise the Lord".

Originally the name of a Rabbi, scholar, and Principal (HaNasi) of the Talmudic Academy in ancient Israel around the time of Jesus. Due to its simple virtuousity, universal applicability, and moral underpinnings, the Golden Rule is often attributed to Jesus, however it is actually one of Rabbi Hillel's sayings. He said it when a non-believer taunted Rabbi Hillel into teaching him the Torah while the agnostic stood on one foot on the roof of a building. The Rabbi commented,

"Do not do unto your neighbors, that which is spiteful unto you.
The rest is commentary. Now go and study!"
